Do Weight Loss Supplements Actually Work? Let’s Look at the Science
There’s a lot of marketing out there these days for weight loss supplements. The claims they make are remarkable—lose weight without dieting or exercising! But do they really work? In this article, we’ll look at the science behind weight loss supplements to better understand their efficacy.
One thing is certain though, weight loss supplements should not be used as a substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise, but should be used in addition to diet and exercise to provide an extra boost of support in the effort to lose weight.
Are all weight loss supplements effective?
The short answer is no. Weight loss supplements are intended to complement a healthy diet and regular exercise plan.
That’s why it’s essential for adults to also follow a healthy eating plan and work out regularly if they hope to see real results. Unfortunately, many people don’t and don’t realize that weight loss supplements do require effort to be effective.
How the metabolic process works for weight loss, fat loss, and keeping weight off for good
All food goes into one of three metabolic pathways—the respiratory, the digestive, or the catabolic pathway. The respiratory pathway uses oxygen to break down carbohydrates and fats for energy. The digestive pathway breaks complex carbohydrates down into single sugars and uses those sugars for energy. The catabolic pathway breaks complex protein and fat down into single amino acids and fatty acids for energy.
Our bodies naturally use all three metabolic pathways for energy, but 75 percent of our energy is produced by the respiratory pathway and 25 percent by the catabolic pathway. In order to lose weight, we have to expend more energy than we consume—that’s where the catabolic pathway comes in!
When we consume more calories than we need, our bodies store the excess as fat or carbohydrates for future use. However, if we take those calories away, our bodies have no choice but to burn them for energy.
The catabolic pathway breaks those stored calories down into their components (like glucose and fatty acids) and uses them to produce energy for our bodies. So we can lose weight by consuming fewer calories, or we can lose weight by taking in fewer calories while simultaneously expending more energy through exercise or activity.
Weight loss supplements help by causing the body to burn more fat for energy.
Now with all of this in mind, let’s take a look at how supplements can help you burn more calories.
Can weight loss supplements help burn more fat?
Your body’s metabolic rate is the amount of energy it burns while at rest. As you lose weight, your body’s metabolic rate decreases as well. This makes it harder for you to lose weight because your body needs more energy to maintain its new weight.
For example, a supplement called CLA can help with this problem by boosting your metabolism and increasing the rate at which your body burns fat. CLA is a naturally occurring fatty acid found in animal products like milk and cheese, but you can get a similar benefit from taking a supplement. In fact, studies have shown that CLA may help promote weight loss by reducing body fat and raising metabolism.
Weight loss supplements contain ingredients that can increase your body temperature and metabolism, both of which can help burn fat. For example, caffeine can increase the amount of fat that your body burns as fuel.
What is the science behind supplements for losing weight?
The idea behind weight loss supplements is straightforward—they contain ingredients that increase metabolism or block the absorption of fats and carbohydrates. But do these actually work?
There’s no magic bullet when it comes to losing weight. Most weight loss supplements rely on one or more ingredients that reduce appetite or boost metabolism. The effectiveness of these ingredients varies depending on the individual product and the person using it, though.
Some supplements contain caffeine or green tea extract, both of which can help boost fat-burning activity in the body. Others contain herbal ingredients like guarana and yerba mate that increase energy and reduce hunger.
Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee that these ingredients will work as well for you as they did for others—or at all! For example, the stimulant ingredients found in many diet supplements have been shown to increase blood pressure, heart palpitations, and irritability in some people who take them.
There are also certain herbs that have been shown to increase metabolism and promote weight loss. For example, cayenne contains capsaicin, which boosts metabolism by up to 25 percent for several hours after taking it. However, taking too much cayenne can cause stomach problems, so it’s best to take cayenne in capsule form rather than drinking it like tea or eating the spice directly.
For me personally, the best supplements use a particular mix of ingredients that work together synergistically. There’s no one ingredient that will handle your weight issues unless you also change your lifestyle.
Are weight loss supplements safe?
Weight loss supplements may carry more health risks than benefits for some people. The stimulants in them can cause anxiety, heart palpitations, high blood pressure, dehydration, and other problems for some people. In some cases, they may even cause more weight gain!
On the other hand, people who already suffer from high blood pressure or heart disease may be at greater risk of experiencing problems from certain stimulants found in weight-loss supplements.
Weight loss supplements could also interfere with medications.
Some drugs can interact with the herbs or stimulants found in some supplements to produce harmful side effects or could themselves cause weight gain. For example, grapefruit juice can interfere with certain drugs like statins (used to treat high cholesterol) and blood pressure medications.
Some weight loss supplements may also contain grapefruit extracts or citrus oils as a flavoring. Other medications that can interact with weight-loss supplements include antidepressants, antihistamines, and corticosteroids.
The bottom line? If you’re on any kind of medication, consult your doctor before using any weight-loss supplement to ensure that it’s safe for you to take.
What ingredients really work for fat loss?
Many weight loss supplements use ingredients such as caffeine and green tea extract—which don’t actually help you lose weight—to make their products seem more effective.
Unfortunately, these ingredients can have unpleasant side effects such as jitters and anxiety.
On the other hand, there are some ingredients that have been shown in research to help you lose weight. For example, the extract of the African mango seed has been shown to reduce body weight and fat mass in obese adults when taken in conjunction with diet and exercise.
Other promising ingredients include resveratrol and chitosan—both have antioxidant properties and can help boost your body’s metabolic rate, which helps you burn more calories and lose weight.
So to sum up…
Don’t trust anyone who claims to have a magic weight loss pill or product—it’s not going to happen! There’s no substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise when it comes to losing weight and keeping it off for good. weight loss supplements should be used in addition to diet and exercise to provide an extra boost of support in the effort to lose weight.
